Human normal immunoglobulin are medicines which contain antibodies (proteins that are normally found in your blood which helps your body to fight infections).
It is used for those who have weak immune system, and to those who do not have enough antibodies in their blood and tend to get frequent infections.
This medicine is used to treat certain types of diseases by correcting the lack of antibodies in your blood. It helps raise abnormally low immunoglobulin levels in your blood to its normal level (replacement therapy).
Human normal immunoglobulin may also be used as antibody replacement therapy for those with low antibody before or after transplants.
It may also be used to treat inflammatory disorders (e.g. Kawasaki disease, Guillain-Barré syndrome).
Human normal immunoglobulin may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Human normal immunoglobulin injection is to be given intravenously (into the vein). It is delivered directly into the bloodstream via the blood vessel.
Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your condition.
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any doses. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Human normal immunoglobulin.
If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
Alert your doctor if you have a deficiency of immunoglobulin A (IgA) as Human normal immunoglobulin may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- overweight
- diabetes
- low blood volume
- blood vessel disease
- blood clotting disorders
- high blood pressure
- kidney disease
- heart disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Use Human normal immunoglobulin with care to an elderly. Elderly may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medicine.
While you are being treated with this medicine, ensure adequate fluid intake to avoid dehydration.
Let your doctor know if you have been recently vaccinated. Do not receive any vaccinations without first asking your doctor.
If you are going for certain laboratory or diagnostic tests, inform your doctor that you are using this medicine.
For as long as you are using this medicine, you may need to have routine blood tests to check your body’s response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often need to have these tests.
Human normal immunoglobulin may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: injection site redness, itching, swelling or pain, chills, tiredness, headaches, fever, nausea, vomiting, joint and back pain.
Some side effects may be serious, although they are not common. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience:
- rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes
- shortness of breath, chest pain
- pain and swelling in the arms or legs
- difficulty or inability to pass urine
- severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Alert your doctor if you have been recently vaccinated. Do not use Human normal immunoglobulin if you had just been vaccinated.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in the refrigerator, between 2-8 °C, away from the reach of children. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.
Do not use this medicine if it becomes cloudy or if it has changed in colour.
The container should be replaced in the outer carton after use to protect the contents from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
